What travelers are saying
"Sailing the catamaran from Bayahibe to Saona was the highlight of our Punta Cana trip. Open bar with rum, a buffet lunch on the beach and a stop at the natural pool to swim with starfish. Pure Caribbean."
"The natural pool in the middle of the sea is unreal: waist deep clear water with starfish everywhere. Snorkel gear was included and the speedboat ride back to Bayahibe was a blast."
"We booked the private charter for our family and the captain stopped wherever we wanted. Calm turquoise water, white sand beach to ourselves and excellent fresh fish for lunch."
Saona Island is a tropical island in the Cotubanama National Park, off the south east coast of the Dominican Republic. It is reached only by boat from Bayahibe, about one hour west of Punta Cana. Famous for white sand beaches, palm groves and the offshore natural pool where starfish live in shallow water.
Group catamaran day trips with open bar and lunch start from around $80 per adult, mid-range catamaran-and-speedboat combos from $150, and private charters from $400 per boat. Most include free hotel pickup from Punta Cana, Bavaro and La Romana.
Yes. Catamarans and speedboats carry life jackets for all ages and the natural pool is shallow and calm. Most operators welcome children of all ages and infants travel free or at reduced fare. Bring sunscreen, hats and snacks for younger kids.
December through April is the dry season with sunny days, calm seas and minimal rain. May, June and November are also great with fewer crowds. Avoid August through October if you can since this is peak Atlantic hurricane season and tours may be cancelled at short notice.
Swimwear, a beach towel, reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water shoes for the rocky shore and some cash in pesos for tips. Cameras and phones in a waterproof pouch since the natural pool stop is wet. Most catamarans give you a wristband for the open bar.
Saona pairs naturally with a Catalina Island snorkel day, a Hoyo Azul tour at Scape Park, an ATV ride to a Macao beach or a zipline session at Anamuya. Save Saona for a calm sea day and use the inland Scape Park as a backup if the wind picks up.
We recommend booking at least 48-72 hours in advance, especially during winter holidays, spring break and around Easter when Saona day trips sell out fast. Private charters and small group catamarans go first. Instant confirmation on all bookings.
Yes. Most tours offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before departure are non-refundable. Check the specific tour for details.
